Statement | Florida House Bill 999

Director of Communications

March 11, 2023 - Last month, House Bill 999 was filed with the Florida Legislature. Referred to by some media outlets as “anti-diversity” legislation, this bill aims to quell diversity and inclusion education and initiatives at state-funded universities, among other dire consequences to higher-level public education.

It is the goal of the National Board of Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. to emphasize that at the very core, our organization aims to foster inclusivity within communities, both on university campuses and beyond.

During this legislative season, representatives in Florida will discuss the bill, including the particularly concerning section 1004.06 which has raised concern within the National Board of Directors as it relates to undergraduate chapters operating in the state university system, including the following chapters:
Lambda Chapter, Florida State University
Alpha Alpha Chapter, University of Florida
Alpha Upsilon Kaleidoscope, Florida International University
Alpha Mu Chapter, Florida Gulf Coast University

As such, the National Board has initiated outreach to enlist support and resources from Fraternity and Sorority Life contacts within the schools listed above. Additionally, we are partnering with the NMGC to discuss a plan of action that addresses possible outcomes and how it will directly or indirectly impact our organization.

It should not come as a surprise that an idea as simple as fostering inclusion and celebrating diversity threatens those who have introduced this abhorrent bill. Let this be a firm reminder that voting at the local, state, and national level is vitally important - now more than ever.

We wholeheartedly believe that awareness of and education about different races, cultures, religions, backgrounds, and lifestyles contributes to a more just and equitable society. We vehemently insist on continued support and resourcing for collegiate programs that center diversity, equity, and inclusion - especially greek letter organizations that foster belonging.

What you can do:
 - Contact Florida's Legislators and implore them to vote "No" on HB 999.

 - Support Xi Zeta's Representation Matters Book Drive & Fundraiser. All books received will be donated to a local community center in Florida. Proceeds from merchandise purchased will also be used towards the book drive.

Additional updates will be provided as we closely monitor the discussions within the legislature. Should you have any questions or concerns you’d like to express as it relates to Florida’s HB 999, please contact director.communications@thetanuxi.org.
